Mission Statement
The Mark Twain Center for the Study of Human Freedom was founded in the beginning of 2020 and is a student led-faculty supported initiative. The Center encourages deep intellectual thought around issues that cut across academic disciplines and empowers students to take control of their education. It places students in charge of hosting seminars, guest speaker lectures, conversations with faculty, friendly debate, and a wide host of other programming. Alongside stellar Student and Faculty Fellows, the Center also boast a number of Heterodox Fellows that bring different perspectives into the curriculum. The program is named after Mark Twain, a Missouri native who fiercely advocated for the abolition of slavery, free markets, limited government, and individual liberty. Twain spent many years in Connecticut particularly in Hartford which he considered one of the most important and beloved homes of his life.
